Windows 8 New Logo

Microsoft has unveiled the new Windows 8 logo, its most dramatic resign in a very long time. The logo ditches not only the four iconic logo colours and all traces of shadows and gradients, but also the “waving flag” that debuted with Windows 3.0 in 1990. Colours and visual flourisher were added over the years to demonstrate the growing capabilities of hardware and software.

Now, the “authentically digital” Metro look of Windows 8’s live tiles and light typography means there’s no need for them anymore. An outside consultant pointed out that the name Windows was incongruent with a flag-shaped logo, which led the Windows design team to rediscover the pane-shaped Windows 1.0 logo from 1985. An angle was chosen to represent motion and perspective. The logo is as dramatic a departure from its predecessor as the actual operating system will be.
